Master of Mechanical Engineering (MME)

The Master of Mechanical Engineering (MME) is a non-thesis, professional degree program designed for practicing engineers and those seeking to advance their technical leadership skills. Unlike the research-focused Master of Science, the MME prioritizes practical application and flexibility, allowing students to broaden their expertise across engineering disciplines or integrate business and legal concepts into their technical training.

This program is available face-to-face or fully online (via UH-Extend), making it an ideal choice for working professionals in Houston’s energy and aerospace sectors.

Degree Requirements

The MME is a 30-credit-hour program that offers significant flexibility in course selection.

  • Total Credit Hours: 30 hours (10 Courses)
  • Core Engineering Depth: Minimum of 21 credit hours from MECE courses at the 6000-level or above.
  • Professional Breadth (Electives): The remaining 9 credit hours may be chosen from:
    • Additional MECE graduate courses.
    • Approved graduate courses from the Bauer College of Business, UH Law Center, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, or other Engineering departments.

Optional Project Track Students may choose to replace up to 6 credit hours of coursework with a Graduate Project (MECE 6368 & 6369). This hands-on track typically involves designing or constructing an engineering apparatus under faculty supervision, providing tangible evidence of technical mastery.

Admission requirements

Applicants are evaluated based on a holistic review of their academic and professional background.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (preferably from an ABET-accredited program).
  • GPA: Minimum 3.00/4.00 GPA on the last 60 semester credit hours.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Three letters attesting to your capacity for graduate-level work (at least two from tenure-track faculty preferred; one may be from an industry supervisor).
  • GRE: Optional.

Graduation Requirements

To earn the degree, students must maintain:

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 over all courses.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 specifically on all MECE courses.
