The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers flexible learning options designed to meet the needs of working professionals. We subscribe to a simple philosophy: One Degree, Multiple Paths.
Whether you study on campus or online, you learn from the same world-class faculty, complete the same rigorous assignments, and earn exactly the same degree.
1. The UH-Extend Option (Fully Online)
Best for: Working professionals seeking a competitive, flat tuition rate.
UH-Extend is our dedicated online enrollment track. It is designed for students who intend to complete their entire degree remotely.
- Tuition: Significantly reduced, flat rate (approx. $745 per credit hour) regardless of residency.
- Flexibility: No on-campus presence is required.
- Eligibility: Open to all students (domestic and international) who do not require an F-1 visa for campus presence.
- Programs Available:
- Master of Mechanical Engineering (MME)
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (MSME)
- Graduate Certificates (e.g., Engineering Data Science, Subsea Engineering)

2. Traditional / Hybrid Option
Best for: Students who want access to campus resources, labs, or visa sponsorship.
Our traditional program offers the ultimate customization. Students can mix-and-match learning formats—taking some classes face-to-face and others online—to fit their weekly schedule.
- Tuition: Standard tuition and fee rates apply (based on residency).
- Campus Access: Full access to research labs, libraries, and the Recreation Center.
- Visa: Eligible for F-1/J-1 student visas.
How Classes Are Taught (Delivery Formats)
Unlike many online programs that rely solely on pre-recorded content, UH Engineering offers a high-touch, interactive experience.
Synchronous “HyFlex”
- How it works: The instructor delivers a live lecture in the classroom that is simultaneously video-streamed to online students.
- Your Choice: You can log in via Zoom/Teams to participate in real-time discussions OR watch the recorded lecture later at your convenience.
- Interaction: Includes weekly live office hours with faculty.
Asynchronous “On-Demand”
- How it works: Course content, lecture videos, and assignments are posted to the course website for you to access entirely on your own schedule.
- Support: Instructors still hold weekly live office hours to ensure you have support when needed.
These flexible options are ideal for working professionals and students seeking to deepen their technical expertise while balancing career and personal commitments.
